Examining Effective Data Handling Strategies For Secure & Efficient Border Control - Delivering New Capabilities For Data Sharing & Risk Assessment

Interactive Pre-Conference Workshop - 17 March 2008 - 09.00 - 12.30

The UK Department of Transport has estimated that by 2030, between 400-600 million passengers will be processed through airports each year, as opposed to 200 million in 2003.

With the threat of terrorism, increasing international travel, and particularly in the UK with the influx of migrants and cross-border organised crime, it is fundamental for airports to be able to check and identify those passengers who present a risk from the legitimate passenger who is passing through the airport as normal. Added to security, there is a need to streamline passenger flow and ensure the passenger experience is as smooth and efficient as possible. Operational processes which use resources more effectively and adopt more efficient methods and practices must be aligned with high security in order to be able to identify increased security risk individuals.

Developing collaborative approaches to securing borders, by working alongside cross-border and government agencies, airports and airlines is essential to enhance the level of control and knowledge of people entering countries. Clearly, much has already been done, with biometrics, RFID, technology developed to link airports, seaports and train terminals with a real-time passenger checking system. But, what is the latest technology for providing data or information intelligence for disclosing passenger details? How can we improve further data handling across borders and different parties? How do we assess the level of the risk across agencies?

These are all questions which will be raised and discussed in this half-day workshop. Airports will be invited to provide a 5 minute presentation or comments on their understanding to date. Attendees are also encouraged to raise the necessary questions to lead the sharing of success and thinking on this topic.
